To Visit: In the heart of the city you will find the Fontana del Nettuno, called "Biancone" by the Florentines, a Ammannati’s masterpiece of marble sculpturing, place at the mouth of a still-functioning Roman aqua duct. Palazzo Vecchio is Florence’s most famous, having become a monument to the Medici family who dominated the city during the 15th century. Nearby is the Galleria degli Uffizi, one of the most important and renowned art museums in the world. Besides the Uffizi, Firenze has other museums of noteworthy importance: the Bargello is focused on sculptures, and plays host to many masterpieces of Donatello, Giambologna and Michelangelo. The Accademia collection hosts Michelangelo’s David as well as his Prigioni (Slaves). Palazzo Pitti, another famous, grand palace decorated with the private collection of the Medici family. Behind the palace is the Giardino di Boboli, elaborately decorated with many interesting sculptures. Probably the only one of its kind is the Corridoio Vasariano, an elevated path that connects Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti by way of the Galleria degli Uffizi and over Ponte Vecchio, inside a vast collection of Varsari’s self-portraits and some portraits dating back to the 1600-1700s. The Santa Croce church contains among many, the monumental tombs of Galileo, Michelangelo ed un commemorative plaque to Dante Alighieri (who is really buried in Ravenna) and other important people to the Florentine history. Florence’s architectural gem is the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral, known simply as "il Duomo". The magnificent dome was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, and the nearby campanile (bell tower) by Giotto. Even the adjacent battistero (baptistery) is noteworthy, with its bronze doors formed by troubled tiles that won Ghiberti the 1401competition that had as participants even Donatello and Brunelleschi. To be noted too is the Santa Maria Novella church, Orsanmichele and the Museo di San Marco. Ponte Vecchio, characterized by its multitude of important jewellery shops atop it. Realized for the first time by the Etruschi in very antique times, this bridge is the only on in the city to have survived the Second World War. Piazza della Signoria Piazza della Signoria is Florence’s central piazza, seat of civil power with Palazzo Vecchio and heart of the city’s social life. It is located in the central part of medieval Florence, south of the Duomo and just a few metres from Ponte Vecchio and from the Arno. Piazza del Duomo Piazza del Duomo rises in the heart Florence’s historic centre. It is dominated by the mass of the cathedral and of the buildings correlated to it, such as Giotto’s Campanile (bell tower) and San Giovanni’s Baptistery. Piazzale Michelangelo Piazzale Michelangelo represents the most famous observation point of Florence’s panorama, reproduced in innumerable postcards and is a must-see for tourists visiting the city. Piazza Santa Croce Piazza Santa Croce is dominated by the basilica that shares its name and being so large and of a regular shape, during the Renaissance became the ideal place for knighthood games, festivals, performances, folk games, like calcio in costume football in costumes. Palazzo Strozzi It is considered one of the civile Florentine’s masterpieces of the Renaissance. Duomo di Santa Maria del Fiore The Santa Maria del Fiore church is the Duomo of Florence. It is Europe’s fourth largest church after St. Peter’s in the Vatican, St. Paul’s in London and the Duomo in Milan. It is 153 metres long while the dome base is 90 metres wide.
